Gavriel Jecan was born in Romania in 1962. He began photographing at the age of 10, shooting black and white with a Russian camera, often on hiking trips with his father in the mountains. His love of nature and travel evolved into rock climbing, and Jecan competed on the University climbing team national and international.
In 1986, Jecan literally climbed his way out of Communist Romania, escaping to Greece via Rodopi mountains ( Bulgaria). He spent the next two years in Greece, before emigrating to US, first in New York, Texas, Colorado and finally Washington State.
13 Years ago, established in his new country, Jecan began as a professional photographer.His love of nature and sports gave him unique insights into both in his photography. And he has taken up the profession with enormous passion and success.
In 1994 , he joined Art Wolfe Inc. Jecan has been on all of the major trips that Wolfe has made worldwide since then. The quality and scope of Jecan’s shooting quickly gained him representation by the worlds largest international stock photography agencies.
Jecan participated in many of Wolfe’s most recent new books. Jecan shares cover credit with Wolfe for his photographs in Colorado, Pacific Northwest (Sasquatch Books Publishing Co.), Frogs, The Nature of Lions ( Firefly Publisher),.
He did a number of children books : C for Coyote , Wild Colors and Alaska Animal Babies. He was also a contributor to the international book, Megadiversity .
In 2000 Art Wolfe Inc. released a new international adventure, how to video entitled
“The Living Wild”. Jecan shot the footage for the video. A good deal of the footage has been aired on national television.
Jecan’s images continue to appear regularly as stock photographs in magazines worldwide , including : International Wildlife, Backpacker, National Geographic, Midwest Express, Nature Foto( Germany) German GEO, Outside, Sinra (Japan) and Terre Sauvage (France) .His work has been featured in international ad campaigns for Hasselblad. . Jecan continues to pursue specialties in nature , wildlife, landscapes, travel, historical architecture, indigenous peoples , especially children.
